Over the years technology has become increasingly better than ever as well as more accessible, to the point where it’s integral to our everyday lives and many of our jobs. Many offices have dropped paper and gone completely digital, with many others allowing us the ability to work wherever we are, meaning more flexibility. Technology brings convenience and efficiency and brings improvements to today’s workforce year after year. Here are a few ways technology has impacted and will continue to impact today’s workforce.

Work Anywhere

One of the largest contributions technology has made to the workforce is providing the ability for people to work anywhere. No longer is it entirely necessary to make your daily commute to the office, regardless of how long that commute may be. Many jobs still try to have required office hours, especially if culture is something they focus on, but it’s now possible for companies to be much more flexible with their employees and allow them to work from home or bring their work on trips with them. This also means that in some professions, you can live in an entirely different state or country than where your job is located. The internet as well as laptops, tablets, and other smart devices have changed the way we approach office jobs forever.

Efficiency

The rapid growth of technology has allowed for efficiency we could have never dreamt of 30 years ago. Gone are the days of waiting to send things through postage or depending on phones to do all of our communication outside of the office. Email and instant messaging are commonplace in many offices, and the ability to use mobile smartphones has made it possible to get in touch with anyone regardless of with they are with a simple text message. Receiving payment for the services you provide is also easier than ever and is oftentimes almost immediate.

Detaching From Work Isn’t As Easy

While technology has brought many great benefits to the workforce, it isn’t without a few downsides. One shining example is the inability of many workers to detach themselves from their jobs. We live in an “always connected” world and that means it’s easier than ever to quickly check your work email in the evening or on weekends, and since we can work from practically anywhere many are working longer hours. While some might believe that means better overall quality of work, it more often than not just leads to burnout and potential mental health problems for workers.
